Sian Ka’an is the next location in which to invest

In the Yucatan Peninsula, just south of Tulum, on the spectacular Mexican Caribbean coast exists a land so beautiful that the ancient Mayans considered it sacred, and so they named it Sian Ka’an, which translates to mean “birthplace of the sky”.

Sian Ka’an is a natural reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage Site that borders Tulum to the immediate south. With beautiful white sand beaches, transparent warm turquoise waters, coral reefs, nearby Mayan ruins, and proximity to Tulum it has all the necessary ingredients to become an even more private and exclusive version of neighboring Tulum.

With over 1.3 million acres of protected land and 75 miles of coastline, the Sian Ka’an biosphere reserve makes up approximately one third of the Caribbean coast of Mexico. In 1986 the President of Mexico decreed the Sian Ka’an Biosphere a national reserve that would only allow for extremely limited development in order to protect the 23 known archeological sites, 103 known mammal species, and 336 known bird species that inhabit this natural sanctuary.

To rent a home, or enjoy something very private the only option available is to stay within the Sian Kaan reserve. As a result, Sian Kaan is starting to be discovered as a luxury destination. The limited supply is currently drawing very high rental rates for homes ranging from $1,500 usd – $4,500 usd per day.

The business model that homeowners are using to achieve rental rates of at least $1,500 usd per day include hiring an outside property manager who can handle bookings, and manage a 3 – 4 person team including a live in couple to handle cleaning and maintenance, a cook, and a waiter.

With this type of team in place the home essentially acts as a small boutique hotel that can be rented by the room or by the entire home.

With the advent of websites such as Airbnb, Homeaway, and Luxury Retreats and a team in place these boutique homes-hotels have the ability to provide interesting returns that for home rentals were once unimaginable.
